Introduction:

The Prophet (S.A.W) was born to a well known family of Arabia. His father was very beloved to entire family and he passed away at a very young age while his wife was expecting their first son. Hazrat Muhammed (S.A.W) was born to a single mother. Although his father was not there, he had really caring males around him like Abdul Muttalib and Abu Talib. His mother, grandfather and uncle passed away respectively but they all loved him unconditionally and cared about him a lot. After the death of Abdul Muttalib, his uncle who was a very noble and honest man took him under his care. Abu Talib was not a very rich man; the financial position wasn’t very good so Prophet (S.A.W) desired to help him. He engaged himself into shepharding. All the previous prophets once in their lifetime engaged into this activity. Because you learn how to be patient yet dilligent. Eventually the Prophet (S.A.W) ventured into market place and initially worked as a broker, he soon became known for his honesty. People started calling him As-Sadiq and Al-Ameen. He worked very very hard. Until finally, he received a business proposition from a woman by the name of Khadija bint Khuwalid who came from a very good family, Khuwalid was the one who saved Hajr-e-Aswed from being stolen. Khadijah was very sophisticated and intelligent. She was known to be an elegant and beautiful lady. She was married twice before. Both of her previous husbands passed away and had three children; two sons (Hala and Hind) and a daughter (Hinda). Some narrations say that her father had passed away. She had started a business and her business flourished very well. She wanted a person as her worker and she desired that it would be an honest and respectable person. She was referred to Abu Talib, who then made her to meet his nephew Prophet (S.A.W). It was decided between them that Mohammed (S.A.W) will go on a business trade for her, she asked her servant Maisarah to accompany him who witnessed his integrity and also some miraculous events like clouds providing shade over Mohammed (S.A.W)’s head. Eventually when they come back, the Prophet (S.A.W) made twice the profit that was ever made by Khadija in her business transactions. Maisarah also told Khadija about whatever he witnessed, both of them were highly impressed by him. Also, Khadija saw a dream when she walks out of her home into the courtyard and she sees that sun lightens her entire courtyard with light. When she told her christian cousin about this dream Waraqah Bin Naufil, he said that Muhammed (S.A.W) will be a Prophet in some time and asked her to say yes to the proposal.
How They got Married:

It was Nafisa, Khadija’s friend who first mentioned that she marry Prophet (S.A.W). khadija, at that time was the most saught after woman at that time, and received proposals frequently. At the other side, Mohammed (S.A.W) also used to receive proposals. Khadijah confessed that Muhammed (S.A.W) was a fine and ideal man. Nafisa then handled the proposal herself. She went to Prophet (S.A.W), and Prophet (S.A.W) consulted his uncle first. After discussion among the elders of the two families, the marriage was done. Khadijah denied Muhammed (S.A.W) to build himself financially and prepare for wedding.  He offered Mahar of 20 camels to Khadijah.

Further events in their Lives:
At the age of 35, it was Holy Prophet (S.A.W) who solved the dispute that took place while building Ka’abah where people fought who would place Black Stone in its place. It occurred to a wise old man that the next person who walks through the door will decide who will put the Stone (According to some narrations). And, when Holy prophet (S.A.W) entered, they all took out a sigh of relief. They all surrounded him and asked him to decide. The solution he gave was fantastic, he took out his shawl and asked all people to hold around the corners. Black stone was placed in the middle, people lifted the shawl together and then Muhammed (S.A.W) placed the stone and the problem was solved peacefully.
After his marriage, it was a decade after when another important event took place in his life. This was because he got married, he was building a family and upbringing his kids. He was a remarkable father, he invested a decade of his life into the illustrious historical figures like Fatimah and Zainab. He focused on his family and children and then he preached.
It is very important to understand this time of his life.

Their Children:

They had six children. The eldest son Qasim died after first year of his life. The first daughter was Zainab who lived a full life. The second was Umm-e-Kulsum who married Usman ibn Affan, when Umm-e-Kulsum died, his third daughter Ruqaiyyah was married to Usman ibn Affan. The fourth daughter was Fatimah, who is well known and she outlived Holy Prophet (S.A.W). Their sixth child was Abdullah who also died when infant.

Pre-Prophecy Events:
Muhammed (S.A.W) started having dreams which would then come true the next day. At one moment in his life, he thought he needed to get away from the noise and reflect upon his thoughts. Khadija co-operated with him and packed him supplies and sends him off lovingly. He found Ghaar-e-Hira and started to meditate and reflect. He used to come and go frequently. Once, khadijah got worried about his food supplies and came with some food for him.
Their relationship was based on understanding and facilitating and accomodating with each other. It is said that the blessed couple never argued.

Receiving Revelation:
When he received his first revelation, he came back shivering and travelling. Khadjah (R.A) wrapped and covered him up. He told his wife about his experience and the Divine Responsibility placed on his shoulders. Khadiija sat down next to him, took his hands and looked into his eyes, she said:
“There is absolutely nothing to worry about, God will never ruin you. Why am I so confident in saying that? After sharing fifteen years of life with you, You are a good family man, you honour your guests, you look for people who have fallen through the cracks and overlooked and destructed. You take care of those people who can’t take care of themselves and you are always the first one waiting there. There is no way that God will ever abandon you.”
She had conviction and would trust him no matter what, she would follow him to the moon. And then, Prophet (S.A.W) asked who will believe in this message. She said that I will and proclaimed Shahadah. She took him to her cousin Waraqa Bin Naufil who said thet Muhammed (S.A.W) was indeed the Prophet of Allah.
Jibrael taught Prophet (S.A.W) wudhu and prayer. Immediately, he went to Khadijah and taught her these things. They then started to pray together. During the night when they were praying, Ali, the son of his uncle asked about their actions and he then accepted faith. They prayed together as a family.
Further Events:

From that point on, Khadijah stood by her husband. Muhammed (S.A.W) turned to her whenever he had difficult situation in his life like his dialogue with Abu Lahab on Mount Safa. Khadija and Muhammed (S.A.W) started helping poor people of Makkah who started accepting Islam and were tortured, they freed them and fed them and sent them to Habashah and East Africa.

Death of Khadija (R.A):
Finally, after a lot of events, there came a time when Meccans decided to isolate and boycott Muhammed (S.A.W) and his family, they stayed far away from the city for 3 years. They were deprived of food and people died a lot. The situation got worse gradually, until one day, the boycott was lifted. During this time, Khadija became very sick and after some time of their return, she passed away.
Prophet (S.A.W) was devastated by her death, he was a single father, two of his daughters were not married. He didn’t came out of his home for few days. His family members saw streaks of tears whenever they came to meet him, when Abu Lahb saw his condition he came back and proclaimed that he wont oppose his nephew anymore. Even the heart of Abu Lahb softened when he saw him.
Muhammed (S.A.W) never forgot Khadijah after so many years and events of his life.Four years later,  He started crying when he saw the necklace of Khadija sent by Zainab because it reminded him of Khadija. Many events which occurred after the death of Khadija showed that he honoured and respected the memories of Khadija sending gifts and food to her friends.
Love of Khadija was Divine, when some companions asked him about Khadija, he said: “She was, and she was…”. He was out of words for her, he couldn’t explain it.
Most noteworthy historian Ibn Ishaq writes:
“Khadija the daughter of Khuwalid believed and she supported and helped him in his mission. She was the first one whoever believed in Allah and Messenger of Allah. The first one to accept the truth of Islam. Allah lightened the load of Prophet (S.A.W) through Khadijah (R.A)…

Lessons for Us:
1.       Understand what our Deen teaches us about marriage. Look for character and integrity.

2.       Nobody is better than Holy Prophet (S.A.W) and no woman is better than Khadija (R.A). They got married in a simple way.
