Tafsir Part 1: Surah Humazah!

This specific surah has connections with Surah Takathur & Surah Al-'Asr.

The order is Surah Takathur, Surah Al-'Asr, Surah Humazah!

The primary statement/thesis of the Surah is "Verily the man is in loss"-from Surah Al-'Asr.

1) When Allah uses 'Woe to...'-it is being used when the person is cursing is deeply sad.
Originally used for parents whose children are not obedient. When you used the word 'Woe'- it means the party who is receiving it will not change or turn back.                              *PS: Click on the picture , to go for video :)

2) Humazah versus Lumazah
Humazah- backbiting behind the back
Lumazah- insulting infront of the person
*Arabic point of view, both the words are commonly used in pairs. And there is subtle difference.*
So do take note Allah is condemning people who talk bad/insult the person to their face too. In today's age, people say it is not great deal or not considered backbiting if we insult people in front of them. However, Allah is saying opposite in which they think of.

Scholars also say that those who are involved in this backbiting and slandering are people who has not goals/purpose in the life. So they end up backbiting each other. In stead of finding flaws in themselves, they are finding flaws in others.
3) Details of Humazah
3.1- It can be even used for people who insult others by sarcasm. For example, like someone who say to another person you are genius. But they do not mean it and they are insulting them. However, Allah knows whats inside their hearts.
3.2- It is used to poke something. For example, a stick that has sharp end. So, the people who are in humazah category will continue to poke people until the people will poke at them back. And they will not stop until they have accomplished their goal.
3.3- It ends with (ha) sound at the end. Not only for third ayat but in other ayats. When this happens, Allah(SWT) is trying to emphasize on it based on its severity. Furthermore, this is used when people keep on doing the same thing, its a habit now. Used to indicate that the word is plural.

4) More details about the ayat
4.1- In Islam we know that dua of the victim is powerful. So when Allah is making dua here, it means its very powerful and imagine how strong is the dua is- where we take this matter lightly
4.2 Commentary- Used for people who are ugly/ they are doing despicable things.
4.3- making fun or comedy of others in hurting way. In today's society, some stand up comedians like to make fun of people nationality, accent etc. This is contained in Al-Humaza & Lumaza too. This is especially when some people (muslims) make fun of people based on the religious matters and they are thinking that it is a light matter. But, it is is not light matter . For example, when you are making fun of someone's beard , you are making fun of what PBUH mimick.

5) 2nd AYAH(Gathering Wealth):

What is the connection between the first ayat and second ayat?

5.1-Anyone who want to gather the wealth are criticized as greedy(do not give charity) and he does not want to be criticised as greedy. So, what he do if he does not want to be criticised? He will start to pinpoint other people flaws. He will be engaged in Humazah or Lumazah or both. This way he will be covering his flaws.
Side Note: So when we are reciting the ayat , we should not recite it in a soft, nice way because in this ayat, Allah(SWT) is condemning the ones who gather the wealth without sharing it to the needy.
5.2- They are indulged in another futile habit when they have no purpose in life. In the first ayat, it is mentioned that they have no purpose in life so they are backbiting and slandering. And ,in the second ayat, the same kind of people who has no purpose might be indulged in gathering wealth.
Funny Part: They will be so indulged in gathering wealth that they start to advice people who are in serious in deen that "What do you think about 10 years of time?" "Why do you have short term plans?" . But, it is so ironic. It is because those who are following the deen are thinking about the future. They are not only thinking about 10 years from now. But, more than thousand/ million, infinity time in their next life.
5.3-They are proud of their wealth: It does not make any sense because they cannot gather as much wealth there is in the dunya. Another scholarly opinion, all their wealth are useless because they cannot use it as a recompense for their salvation.
5.4-They will do anything to achieve their wealth. This is evident from child labour factories-"Money at all Cause" . This what is being taught in business schools. They do not have any business ethics. Thet do not think about anyone except themselves.
5.5- Shaddha for WA'ADDADA- To emphasize that keep on counting $ and we can see that some people cannot stop counting. Maalahu here means the wealth that they acquired wrongly. It is rightfully not theirs.

6.1-3rd AYAH

Why do people run after money?
They think savings is linked with survival though they may have food on the table. This is what happen when people have suicidal thoughts when they loose their savings etc. This is why people build monuments, they use theIr wealth as tool for people to know them even after their death.

*This is happening even in Muslim countries. The countries will be poor and they will build this expensive monuments by saying it represents the national symbol/ identity. But, how abt those poor and homeless people staying near monuments, aren't they national symbols too?. How are they going to satisfy their hunger, by licking the monument towers? They want to build those monuments because they want to live eternally by those memories. Allah is questioning the nation of Hud; are you going to live eternally by building those statues? Hence, Allah(swt) do put the desire for humans in terms of living eternally. But, if it is not chanelled to working for Jannah, it will be chanelled to work for building monuments, by gathering wealth etc.
Humans have desire for beautiful things. For example listening to Quran recitation. If, the desire is not chanelled correctly; it will turn the humans to listen to music. Quran specify that humans have two types of desires -- children and wealth. People who have children might have both the desires. But, it is interesting to take note that those who do not have children have obsession to the wealth. Their desire for kids is also chanlled there. That is why sometime when we ask couples on why they do not have children, they will say "We are not sure whether we can feed them we can only fed ourselves" etc

6.2- When people when they think that they have alot $, they will think if Allah can suffice me here, it means He love me. This is what even the protestants church encourage. They will say "Go for that promotion because god loves you."
Allah(swt) address this issue in the Quran by the story of the two owners of garden. This mentality has creeped into muslim minds too. So they will say Allah loves me because He gave me wealth here. He will take care of me in Hereafter so why I should worry abt Akhira? But the answer is NO. Wealth is a test from Allah. For some people, poverty is a test while for others wealth is a test from Allah.

7.1- 4TH AYAH
'Hutamah-also means something that can break. When the crops turn yellow and break. [So, their bones/limbs will be broken]

8.1-Layun badan-thrown and have no value. Allah is saying their wealth will not make any value and they will be thrown to the hell. Some narrations say they will be thrown with their wealth so they can be with their wealth eternally (because they wanted wealth with them eternally)
Usage of Mu'asada-Mu'asada means it is covered but with doors. So why mutabaq (covered with no doors) not used? So that they will try to escape and it will give them a false hope- Allah is also giving them psychological punishment there.

Fi amadin mumadada-amadin means column. Mumad means stretched. Mumadada means stretch to far extreme.

More bits of the surah:- Their bones will be broken till it reach their hearts. Fire lit by Allah is special- this fire is different and severe than any other fire. It can be like no other fire. The fire lit by Allah(muqada) it will be permanent. It will never go off. The fire will lit till the hearts which is the most protected as we all know that our hearts and minds are the most important things (where eeman is in) and it is protected by the bones while the limbs(which often does sinful things) are left open without any protection, SubhanAllah! hearts is mentioned to be lit too because, it is where all the desires are contained too.

In this Surah, Allah uses a very harsh tone because this surah revealed as a response to the one who made fun of Prophet Mohammad PBUH. Making fun of Prophet Mohammad PBUH in any forms is not tolerated.
Kul is used as no one should feel that they are exempted from hellfire. And, this is the end description of hell fire, not only in terms of its revelation time but the way it describes the hellfire.

May Allaah protect us from the torment of Hellfire.
